The Cleanest Lake in America? It’s Lake Chelan, Washington
Lake Chelan was just named the cleanest lake in America, coming in ahead of even Lake Superior, according to a nationwide ranking recently reported by Phil Vandervort with the Everett Post.
That’s a pretty great title for a lake that so many of us have memories of enjoying.
I know I do. Lake Chelan was a place I enjoyed when I was younger, and then years later, I got to experience it again with my own family. There have been days on jet skis, afternoons floating in the lake, and a lot of really good summer memories along the way.
But after spending more time in Manson this summer, I’ve started to see this part of Lake Chelan a little differently.
The lake may be what brings a lot of people here, but it’s not the only thing I’ve come to like about it.

The Manson You See When Things Slow Down
There’s a reason I’ve spent so much time in Manson this summer. One of my listings is in The Village at Lake Chelan, just up the road from downtown Manson.
Between hosting open houses, getting to know some of the neighbors in the community, and spending more time in Manson itself, I’ve had a chance to experience the area differently than I ever had before.

Go into town earlier in the morning and you’ll see another side of it. Locals stop and talk with each other over coffee or while they’re getting ready for the day. People know each other. There’s a small-town vibe that you start to notice when you’ve been here more than once.
I’ve noticed it in other ways, too. More than once, I’ve needed a little help with something while I’ve been here and had a local business owner help me out without wanting to charge me. One told me to just recommend his business to someone else.
That kind of thing sticks with you.
We’ve always felt welcomed here, and the more time I’ve spent in Manson, the more I’ve realized that the lake is only part of what makes this place appealing.
What Does Lake Life Actually Look Like?
For a lot of us, Lake Chelan is probably tied to summer. Hot days, time on the water, boating, jet skis, floating, wineries, and those long summer evenings.
That’s certainly how I thought about it for years.
But spending more time in Manson has made me realize how much there is to enjoy here outside of summer. Fall brings a completely different feel to the vineyards and hillsides, winter brings snow to the mountains and the valley, and spring changes everything again.
And I think that’s one of the things that’s so great about living here. You get to experience this area throughout the year and decide what you want your time here to look like.

And Then There’s the Sunshine
If you live in western Washington, you know how much we appreciate the sun when it comes out.
That’s another thing that feels noticeably different on the other side of the Cascades. The Lake Chelan Valley is known for more than 300 days of sunshine a year.
And that doesn’t just matter in July and August.
Look at that winter photo above. There’s snow on the mountains, but there’s also that bright blue sky and sunshine reflecting off the lake.
That’s part of what makes this area so appealing. You get four distinct seasons, but you also get a very different climate without ever leaving Washington.
There’s Still Plenty to Do When Summer Ends
The lake may be quieter once summer is over, and Manson definitely slows down with it. Some businesses are seasonal or have reduced hours during the off-season, so it’s a different experience than being here in July, but there’s still plenty happening throughout the year.
Fall is actually a really fun time here. This is apple country, so you’ll find apple picking, pumpkin patches, cider pressing and other harvest activities around the valley. There are also wineries and tasting rooms, live music, and fall events happening around Manson.
Then winter brings a completely different feel of its own.
Winter Has Its Own Traditions
Manson’s Village of Lights has been a holiday tradition for decades. After Thanksgiving, the town lights up for the season, with the Christmas tree, holiday displays and events carrying into winter.
And winter around Lake Chelan isn’t only about the holidays. There’s cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Echo Ridge, winter events around the valley, and wineries and tasting rooms to visit throughout the season.
It’s a very different side of Lake Chelan than the one many of us know from summer, and part of what makes this area such an appealing place to call home throughout the year.
Far Enough Away to Feel Like You Got Away
There’s something about crossing the Cascades and heading toward Lake Chelan that makes it feel like you’ve actually gone somewhere.
The landscape changes, the sky seems bigger, and by the time you make your way along the lake toward Manson, it feels very different from what you left behind in western Washington.
I notice it every time I arrive. I take a deep breath. There’s something about being there that just feels calming.
And yet, you’re not isolated. Manson has restaurants, coffee shops, wineries, tasting rooms and the lake right there, while Chelan is only about 15 minutes away.
Manson sits about 7 miles beyond Chelan, so everyday shopping and services are still close by, including Walmart about 20 minutes away. For bigger shopping trips, East Wenatchee is roughly an hour away, where you’ll find Costco and other larger retailers, with Pangborn Memorial Airport nearby as well.
A Home Right in the Middle of It
317 Village Drive puts you close to so much of what makes Manson appealing.
Downtown Manson and Manson Bay are within walking distance, so coffee, restaurants, tasting rooms and the lake are all nearby. Within the gated Village at Lake Chelan community, the pool is just down the street.
The HOA takes care of the lawn, which means less time spent on yard work and more time to enjoy where you live.
And then there are the views.
Those changing views are part of what makes this home so special. From summer sunsets over the lake to snow-covered hills in winter, the view changes right along with the seasons.
